Increase women MPs or face fines, parties told

Image copyright PA Political parties must face fines if they do not ensure at least 45% of general election candidates are female, MPs have recommended.

The government said it was considering the recommendations.
There are currently 195 women in the House of Commons. The cross-party committee"s report said the meant the UK was ranked 48th in the world, in terms of female representations in equivalent institutions.

Driverless cars "to increase congestion" says government

Image copyright Getty Images Image caption The study used software to map out the effects of driverless cars on the road network Driverless cars could initially lead to longer delays on the UK"s major roads, according to a government report.
The Department for Transport predicted a “decline in network performance” once one in four cars become driverless.
However, should driverless vehicles make up between 50% and 75% of cars, DfT researchers say they will reduce congestion.
The average time spent delayed on city roads at rush hour will fall by 12.4% when 25% of vehicles are driverless.
The DfT said early models of the vehicles acted more cautiously and the result could be a “potential decrease in effective capacity” on motorways and A roads.
But as more people adopted the technology and it became common place on the country"s road network, the study found that congestion could be cut by 40%.

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) said there would be a Brexit “aftershock” and that the UK"s exit from the EU would be “the firing gun on a decade of disruption”.
It identified wide-ranging factors that would “reshape how we live and work”.
The government has promised to “forge a new role” for the UK in the world.
In its report, the IPPR, a centre-left think tank, said Brexit would be one of the major “disruptive forces” in the years ahead, saying the vote had delivered a “profound shock” to the UK"s political and economic order which was likely to set the country on a path of permanently lower growth and living standards.
It also anticipated a “demographic tipping point” with a population boom and the number of people aged 65 and over predicted to rise by a third by the end of the ..
