Image copyright PA Image caption The Archbishop will deliver his Christmas sermon during a Eucharist service at Canterbury Cathedral The power of God can chase away “the fear of terror” and “the economies of despair”, the Archbishop of Canterbury will say in his Christmas sermon.
The Most Reverend Justin Welby will speak about finding God in a world which “feels more awash with fear”.
His sentiment was echoed by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Britain"s most senior Catholic, at his midnight Mass.
In his homily at Westminster Cathedral he said there was “much anxiety about the state of the world”.
The Archbishop of Westminster also took time to mention relatives of the elderly, who he said were “frightened that resources to meet the basic needs of their loved ones are being withdrawn as care services are reviewed and reduced”.

Image copyright AFP Image caption Protesters in Turkey hold a placard reading “Aleppo is the world"s shame” EU leaders are looking to boost security and defence co-operation as they try to tackle crises in Europe"s neighbourhood.
They are reacting to the destruction of Aleppo, migrant pressure from Africa and Ukraine"s conflict with Russia.
“We are facing multiple crises, with fires in every corner, and not just in Europe"s corners,” EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.
One such corner is Turkey, struggling with 2.7 million Syrian refugees.
The EU sees its controversial March 2016 deal with Turkey as a model for similar deals in Africa.
Since March the numbers of migrants coming ashore in Greece has fallen dramatically but Turkey accuses the EU of blocking its EU ambitions and failing to meet financial pledges.

EU leaders "not bluffing" over Brexit terms, warns Malta"s PM

EU leaders are not “bluffing” when they say the UK will be left without access to the single market when it leaves the bloc if there is no free movement of people, Malta"s prime minister says.
Joseph Muscat, whose country assumes the EU"s presidency in January, told the BBC “this is really and truly our position and I don"t see it changing”.
Theresa May says the UK will begin the legal process to leave the EU by March.
Mr Muscat said talks on the details of a “new relationship” could be delayed.
Much political debate has focused on the possibility of a “soft” Brexit – the UK retaining some form of membership of the single market in exchange for conceding some control over immigration – and “hard Brexit” – leaving the single market but having fuller control over migration.
But Mr Muscat said the UK and EU needed to first reach agreement on a range of other details once Mrs May triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
He said these included the bill the UK must pay befor..

Business leaders challenge Theresa May"s pay proposals

A report by the Big Innovation Centre rejects holding annual binding votes on pay and the publishing of pay ratios between chief executives and workers.
The two ideas were among the prime minister"s suggestions to address public unease about executive pay.
This week, Mrs May was forced to reject claims she had watered down plans to put worker representatives on boards.
The prime minister set out her intention to strengthen corporate governance when she came to power in the summer. But some proposals have drawn criticism.
Friday"s BIC report – whose authors include Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane and Kingfisher non-executive director Clare Chapman – argues that action on pay..
