Unbeaten France advance to knockout stages
© Getty Images Unbeaten France leapfrogged New Zealand in Group C to qualify for the knockout stages of the FIFA U-20 Women"s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016, courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Port Moresby"s Bava Park. France recorded their first win of the tournament, having drawn their two previous group games, with goals either side of the break from Marie-Charlotte Leger and Clara Mateo.
Les Bleuettes controlled early proceedings and enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half. No9 Leger had the game"s first real chance when she attempted a shot 12 yards from New Zealand"s goal but Kiwi "keeper Nadia Olla was alert, making a close-range save.
Just over ten minutes later, Leger made the breakthrough for France when Maelle Garbino played her in with a incisive through-ball. The forward timed her run perfectly before taking a touch and placing a shot into the far, bottom corner. Unfortunately, Leger"s joy would turn to despair as she was substituted..
