The attacker entered the Baqir ul Olum mosque and detonated a suicide vest among a crowd of people, the Afghan interior ministry said in a statement.
Worshippers had gathered at the mosque to mark the Shiite ceremony of Arbaeen, which comes 40 days after the major festival of Ashura.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing.

The attack comes a week after a blast at a US army base in Bagram, 35 miles north of Kabul, which killed four Americans.
