Yegna, Ethiopia"s "Spice Girls", lose UK funding

International Development Secretary Priti Patel announced a review of the funding last month after reports that pop group Yegna received £5.2m.
Girl Effect, the Ethiopian group which manages Yegna and promotes women"s rights in the country, said its aims had been “wilfully misrepresented”.
But the government said there are “more effective ways” to invest UK aid.
Yegna has been the subject of a long-running campaign by the Daily Mail. It dubbed the band “Ethiopia"s Spice Girls” saying that grants to the group were a waste of money.

Imagine if playing football was a defiant act, a statement of personal freedom. That is the case for many girls in Cambodia, where it is widely frowned upon for young women to engage in sport. Working to change this, and to offer safety and confidence for in-need youth, is a group called the Mighty Girls, which is part of the football-focused community organisation SALT (Sports and Leadership Training) Academy in Battambang.
Linda Choeun faced anger and abuse when she started playing football at 15, eventually leading to her being thrown out of her home. A trip to South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ for the Football for Hope Festival set her life on a new course, and a place in the Mighty Girls program gave her a path forward.
