Senior GP Helen Stokes-Lampard voices fears for services

Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs Council, said general practice was “skating on thin ice”, warning: “Something has to give”.
Some people wait weeks to see a doctor, with potentially serious results, the Staffordshire-based GP said.
NHS England said GPs would be getting extra funding to extend services.
"The big fear"Dr Stokes-Lampard told the Press Association some patients were already waiting two or three weeks to see GPs for non-urgent matters such as suspect lumps or bleeding problems.
But if they wait three to four weeks “the non-urgent stuff may be becoming urgent,” she added.

"Mad dog" general tipped for Trump cabinet



Video: Donald Trump continues cabinet talks Donald Trump and Mike Pence are having further discussions at the President-elect"s New Jersey golf club over who should be in their cabinet.
Several senior posts in the administration have already been filled including US attorney general, CIA director, national security adviser, White House chief of staff and chief strategist.
But there are a number of top jobs still up for grabs and among those seeing Mr Trump have been former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
“Numerous patriots will be coming to Bedminster,” Mr Trump tweeted, adding that he is continuing to “fill out the various positions necessary to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Speaking to Fox News, Vice President-elect Mr Pence refused to be drawn on whether retired Marine Corps General James Mattis would become defence secretary.

Royal Navy "woefully low" on warships

The Royal Navy has 19 frigates and destroyers, but a Defence Select Committee report says that number could fall unless there is a clear timetable set out for replacing older vessels.
It says the UK could “lack the maritime strength” to meet potential threats.
But the Ministry of Defence says it is investing billions in the Navy"s fleet.
The committee"s report examines the MoD"s plans to modernise the Royal Navy"s escort fleet – including the introduction of two new classes of frigate and the enforced refit of engines on certain destroyers.
MPs said they had “serious concerns” about the funding and timetable of the new fleet, and the country"s ability to handle threats from areas like Russia.
