Week 1 in review: Galaxy S8 rumors, Nokia and BlackBerry plans for 2017

CES or no CES, the stream of Samsung Galaxy S8 rumors is flowing steady. This week has brought us a release date, a hint at a Continuum-like feature, and a live photo, which may very well be a fake. Or it might be real, given that the phone is supposedly already in testing in China.
In the "tangible" folder we have the announcement of the Asus Zenfone AR this week in Las Vegas. A Google Tango-capable 5.7-incher with 8GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 821 inside, it also supports Google Daydream. You can"t be Tango-Daydreaming, though – only one at a time. Asus also pulled the wraps off an iPhone 7 Plus-like dual-camera Zenfone 3 Zoom – unlike the Zenfone Zoom with its periscope 3x mechanism, the Zenfone 3 Zoom has a 2.3x range, courtesy of two separate cameras.
Also at CES, Xiaomi unveiled an even hotter looking white version of the already scorching Mi Mix bringing the number of borderless flagships available outside of China to zero – the Mi Mix will still be exclusive to i..

Tory donor threatens to stop funding over Brexit plans

Image copyright PA Image caption Theresa May says she wants firms to have the “maximum freedom to trade with and operate in the single market”. A major Tory donor has warned that he will stop funding the party if Theresa May"s Brexit plans involve the UK coming out of the single market.
Sir Andrew Cook, who has donated more than £1.2m to the party, told The Times the country could “sleepwalk to disaster” if it made such a move.
The engineering firm chairman said at least one of his factories was almost “entirely dependent” on access to it.
Sir Andrew backed the Remain campaign in the EU referendum.
He told the newspaper that the “economic arguments of staying in the single market are overwhelming” and it would be a “catastrophe” if the country left.
“It is very difficult to make a political donation to a party when, although I support it ideologically, I do not believe that my interests and my ideology are ad idem with the principal Brexiteers,” he said.
Theresa May has insisted ..

Private university expansion plans a "risk too far"

Image copyright Science Photo Library Image caption The regulation of the university sector is facing a major overhaul The government"s plans to expand private providers in the UK"s university sector are a “risk too far”, a report from the Higher Education Policy Institute has warned.
The cost of student finance for these “alternative providers” quadrupled in four years to £382m, says the study.
The report warns against a “high-speed” process of allowing new providers to award their own degrees.
The Department for Education says the plans will give students “more choice”.
But the report co-author Robin Middlehurst said the experience of the United States showed “overly generous rules for alternative providers are a magnet for questionable business practices”.
“Better protection of the public purse is overdue, especially given the growth in the number of for-profit providers,” said Prof Middlehurst.
"Bed of nails"The Higher Education and Research Bill, currently bef..

Samsung now plans to remotely kill remaining Note7 units in Korea

Last week, Samsung decided to give more time to Galaxy Note7 in South Korea and elected not to entirely kill the remaining 140,000 units in the wild. In a new development today, however, the tech giant seems to have changed its mind and will allegedly be killing said units after all. To quote the official spokesperson:
Samsung is considering to push the software update to the Note 7 in Korea that can limit the battery charge of the device as the exchange rate has exceeded 90 percent here Now, the statement does mention “limit”, however, since Korean units did already receive the initial preemptive update, capping the charge to 60%, the most likely escalation would naturally be killing the devices – a process already underway in many other markets.
The OTA will likely hit SK Telecom units first, with other carrier, like KT and LG Uplus expected to follow soon. To accommodate the new measures to some extent, Samsung has also extended its exchange or return program until the end of Janu..

ZUK announces Android 7.0 Nougat update plans for the Z2 Pro and Z1

Last month ZUK CEO Chang Chen revealed the fact that the Z2 would receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat soon, and today the Lenovo-owned brand has confirmed that the tasty treat is headed to a couple of other devices too.
The Z2 Pro will receive the new software on January 28, 2017. The Android 7.0 release will come with ZUK"s own ZUI 2.5 on top. Surprisingly, the Z1 will get a beta Nougat build at some point in January. The Z1 has the Snapdragon 801 chipset, and so far no device sporting that SoC has officially received a final, stable Nougat build. So it"s unlikely that this will ever exit the beta stage, but it"s nice to see Lenovo at least offer this to owners of its first ZUK-branded smartphone.
Oddly, today"s announcement made absolutely no mention of the Z2 and its Nougat update. But we already know that it"s in development for that model too, so hopefully it will launch in the near future. That said, it may just be that the Z2 will have to wait unti..
