© Getty Images Mexico survived a second-half fightback from Venezuela to progress to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women"s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016. El Tricolor looked like they were cruising into the knockout stages in Port Moresby after Kiana Palacios" early first-half brace and Teresa Gonzalez"s 53rd-minute goal gave them a three-goal lead.
They suffered a scare, however, when Venezuela battled back to record two goals through Gabriela Garcia and Lourdes Moreno, but held firm to record the victory.
El Tricolor started brightly and took the lead when Palacios gently headed home Maria Sanchez"s delivery on four minutes. Before Venezuela could reply with an opportunity of their own, they found themselves two goals down when Palacios cut into the box from the left and grabbed her second, placing the ball in the far corner with a lovely left-footed finish.
