MPs call for immigration devolution



Image copyright PA Image caption The Scottish government and local councils want to increase immigration to offset the country"s ageing population A cross-party group of MPs has called on the UK government to “seriously consider” handing greater powers over immigration to Scotland.
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration said a commission should be set up to examine how a devolved immigration system might work.
It said the current system had “led to friction” between the UK and Scottish governments.
But it acknowledged there would be major challenges to overcome.
Immigration policy is currently the sole responsibility of Westminster, although the “shortage occupation list” allows Scottish businesses to offer particular jobs to non-EU nationals without first advertising them domestically.
The Home Office said it was not planning to introduce local immigration visa arrangements, but insisted its priority was to build an immigration system that worked for everyone ..

Immigration reaches record high



Image copyright PA Immigration to the UK has risen to a record level with 650,000 migrants in the year to June, the Office for National Statistics has said.
There was also a record number of EU citizens coming to live in Britain with the figure standing at 284,000.
Net migration – immigration minus emigration – remained at a near-record high at 335,000.
Most of the period covered by the figures was before the EU referendum.
Figures show 311,000 people came to live in the UK for work-related reasons.
But the ONS said there was a “statistically significant” rise in the number of people who were “looking for work”, 130,000, compared to 107,000 last year, as opposed to those who had a definite job to go to.
For the first time, Romania tops the list for the country with the most number of migrants to the UK – with 54,000 people coming to live in Britain.
