Android 7.1.1 Nougat rolls out to Nexus 6, factory image and OTA files released

The Nexus 6 is the last smartphone in the Nexus family to receive Android 7.1.1 Nougat. When the update was released to Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, the Nexus 6 was skipped due to an issue found at the last minute.
However, Google promised it will deliver the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update to the Nexus 6 as ..

Nexus 6 finally gets its Android 7.1.1 Nougat update as factory images and OTA files go live

Although Google released Android 7.1.1 Nougat for its Pixels and Nexus devices last month, the Motorola Nexus 6 was left out from the initial rollout. This was later confirmed by the company as having to do with a “last minute bug”. It was eventually fixed and Google promised that the Nexus 6"s first taste of Android 7.1.1 would become available in early January.
Well, here we are. It"s early January alright, and if you"re the impatient type who doesn"t mind using the command line from time to time, you can grab a factory image or OTA zip file from Google"s developer site and flash either to your Nexus 6 to make it run the absolute latest iteration of Android.
We assume the January security patches are included too, and hopefully the over-the-air rollout will start soon – to get this to people who don"t want to mess with ADB. Unfortunately though, it may be a while before every Nexus 6 still out there gets the coveted update notification, seeing as how t..

January security update is now being sent out by Google for Pixel and Nexus devices

Another month has just begun, so it"s time to welcome it with a new monthly Android security update. Google usually outs these on the first Monday of each month, but it"s made an exception this time around, probably having to do with the New Year or something.
Anyway, the security bulletin is up and it lists all of the vulnerabilities that have been fixed. As always, there are two security patch level strings – one will make your phone show the January 1 security update level, the other uses January 5. The latter is the more complete of the two, and it"s what devices supported by Google are getting.
Speaking of which, the company has already made factory images and OTA zip files of the new update available for the Pixel and Pixel XL (two for each, in fact, with build numbers NMF26U and NMF26V), Huawei Nexus 6P (N4F26I and N4F26J), LG Nexus 5X (N4F26I), Pixel C (N4F26I), HTC Nexus 9 (N4F26M), and Asus Nexus Player (NMF26R). If you feel like something"s missing from..

Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for Google Nexus 6 to be released in January

Now over 2 years old, the Motorola-made Nexus 6 is the oldest smartphone that"s still receiving software updates from Google. The handset got a taste of Android 7.0 Nougat in October, and it"s also getting the newer Android 7.1.1 – but not this year.
According to Android Police, Google wa..

The Nexus 6 is getting Android 7.1.1 in early January, Google says

The final version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat started going out to supported Nexus devices in the first part of this month. Well, to all of the still supported Nexuses except one – the Motorola Nexus 6. This was hardly surprising for owners of the 6-inch behemoth, since it was late to the Android 7.0 party too, receiving the update a few weeks after the other devices. And history is now repeating itself.
If you own a Nexus 6, you may even have considered the lack of any official word from Google on the Android 7.1.1 update situation as an indication of the fact that the company has quietly dropped support for the phone released in 2014.
Thankfully that"s not the case. It turns out that a bug was the culprit for the update"s delay, and it"s still on its way to the Nexus 6. The oldest supported Nexus device is due to receive its taste of Android 7.1.1 Nougat in early January. Here"s the full statement sent by Google to Android Police:
Unfortunately, we found a last min..

Nexus 6P owners are experiencing early shutdowns and there is still no fix

A number of Nexus 6P owners have been experiencing an issue that was introduced to the handset with the major update to Android 7.0 Nougat. As reported by many owners on both Reddit and Google’s own Product Forums, the Nexus 6P has been subject to shutting down without warning with as much as 60% battery remaining in a few cases.
The handset would not power back on until the device is plugged back into its charger which is a serious issue. We depend on our mobile devices now more than ever before. In the event of an emergency, its hard to rely on a smartphone that sees unpredictable shut-down episodes. The only way for these to carry their devices reliably is by carrying a charger around or carrying a power bank.
A post on Reddit has come up as a result of Google’s low priority on the issue tracker, encouraging those experiencing the issue to let their voices be heard.
So if you find yourself with a Nexus 6P and you are having the same issue, head over to the product forums and post..

Android 7.1-based CM14.1 nightlies now available for Nexus 5, Nextbit Robin, and more

Alternative Android OS developer Cyanogen has released Android 7.1 Nougat-based CyanogenMod 14.1 nightlies for some devices, including the Google Nexus 5, LG G Pad 7 LTE, Motorola Moto X Pure Edition (2015), Nextbit Robin, Oppo R5/R5s, and Oppo R7 Plus.
It"s worth mentioning that the Moto X Pure Edition nightly build isn"t completely functional – there are reports of kernel panics as well as camera issues.
Moving on, a handful of devices have received Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based CyanogenMod 13 nightlies as well. These include the Samsung Galaxy S III (GSM LTE) as well as the Xiaomi Mi4i and Redmi 3/Prime.
As you might already know, nightlies aren"t usually stable – you may encounter bugs. Also, installing them can not only result in a bricked device, but also void your handset"s warranty, so only proceed if you know what you are doing.

The Nexus 4 is getting some CyanogenMod love with 14.1 nightly builds

If you are the type of person, who tends to form attachments to particular tech and don"t really feel like moving on or upgrading regularly, then chances are you have already found your perfect phone years back and are still with it.
If that is the case and taking into account you are currently on a tech-centric site, chances are you are familiar witch CyanogenMod and might even be running the custom OS. Then, you will also be happy to hear that despite the recent calamities over at Cyanogen Inc., the dedicated custom ROM group is still alive and well and constantly expanding its device reach.
The team appears to currently be working mostly on CyanogenMod 14.1, which is based on the bleeding-edge Android 7.1 Nougat. Their dedication must really run deep, as nightly builds will soon be available for the four-year-old LG Nexus 4 (mako) as well. In the meantime, there is an experimental build already up and you can also get said software for a few other devices:

Android 7.1.1 Nougat will likely hit Nexus devices on December 6

Amid the ongoing Nougat update frenzy in the smartphone realm, it appears Nexus owners will, once again, be blessed with bragging rights for running the latest and greatest Android version. This is all thanks to Google and the decision to thankfully continue supporting the Nexus line with bleeding-edge AOSP builds, even after the company threw its glove into the smartphone market with the Pixel and Pixel XL. Frankly, it was the right thing to do and Google is sticking by it, at least for now, that is, with many Nexus devices already running Android 7.0.
Earlier this month, it also became clear that many recent Nexus devices will go on to receive Android 7.1 as well. Today, Vodafone Australia finally spilled the beans and stated the Nexus 6P will be getting said OTA starting December 6.
This does fall in line with previously cited time frames, as well as the Developer Preview 2 Android 7.1.1 release, posted for Nexus hardware earlier this week. If everything goes according to plan, th..
