Samsung files patent for dual-lens camera configuration

A 2016 trend in smartphone designs was the dual-camera setup and now in 2017 Samsung is catching on too. A patent in Korea has been filed for dual-lens camera configuration. The diagrams in the 37-page document clearly states that Samsung is aiming to enhance the quality of both the background and objects in the foreground.
It seems to work relatively simple. The wide-angle lens scans for anything that is a moving object and if there’s any, the second lens – the telephoto one tracks the image in real time and enables you to adjust zoom and other settings without losing focus.
It is unclear if the technology would be used in the Galaxy S8 or Samsung will need more time before it makes it to an actual product.

Apple files patent applications related to using the Digital Crown on the iPhone and iPad

The Digital Crown is the innovative tool that Apple created so that Apple Watch users could zoom in and out on the watch screen in place of the multi-touch “pinch and zoom.” The latter obviously was not a workable solution for users of the timepiece. Zooming all the way in on an app using the Digita..

Nokia sues Apple for patent infringement in U.S. and Germany (UPDATE)

Back in 2009, Nokia sued Apple claiming that the tech titan had infringed on 10 of its patents dating back to the launch of the very first Apple iPhone in June of 2007. At the time, Nokia said “By refusing to agree (to) appropriate terms for Nokia"s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to..

Nokia files new patent infringement lawsuits against Apple in the US and Europe

Nothing says “we"re back in the mobile space” better than a good old patent lawsuit. At least that"s what Nokia seems to think. Now that the brand"s re-entry into the mobile world has been confirmed countless times by company officials for 2017, Nokia is back at doing something else it hasn"t in a while: suing Apple.
Today the Finnish company announced that it"s filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, as well as the Regional Courts in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich in Germany. Across all these actions, Nokia claims Apple has infringed 32 of its patents, covering display, user interface, software, antenna, chipsets, and video coding technologies.
The official press release on the matter unfortunately doesn"t go into more details, so we don"t yet know exactly how Apple is supposedly infringing these patents. Nokia says that since agreeing to a license covering “some” of its patents ..

Nintendo Switch patent suggests possible VR accessory

Nintendo is all set to release its newest hybrid gaming console, the Nintendo Switch, early next year with more details to be announced in January. A member of the NeoGAF forums has shed some light on a bunch of patent applications that were just published in Nintendo’s name. Sometimes we can see some of the planned functions of a product pass through the US Patent Office before it becomes a reality, but oftentimes, a patent might only live on as an idea, never to be realized.
Among these patents, one of the sections (between 0507 through 0516) details the functions of a head-mounted accessory. The patent’s section mentions the use of HMD (likely meaning Head Mounted Display). The text basically describes the interaction between the main console portion, and some kind of head-mounted accessory.
The information processing system may include an accessory to which the main unit 2 can be attached. An HMD accessory to be described below as an example accessory can be used as a so-called H..

Another Samsung patent gives a clearer picture of the upcoming foldable phone

It appears the Samsung foldable phone plot is thickening yet again. Another interesting patent has surfaced online, showing a brand new design concept for a foldable handset, with bendable displays and what appears to be a detachable camera module.
Samsung foldable phone
This comes as yet another piece in a puzzle that has coming together for over three years now. The Korean giant appeared to be close to a market-ready design back in 2014, but it was during the last few months that we really saw an influx of patents and concept renders. All things considered, Samsung might very well make good on its promise to bring such futuristic devices to the market in 2017 and this newly unearthed design seems to be the most extravagant one yet.
Samsung foldable phone
From what we can gather, it looks like the handset is made out of two distinct pieces, sandwiched together back to back. One appears to be completely covered in a display. The other part likely houses the actual internals of the ..

Samsung was granted yet another patent for flexible display technology

Bendable and flexible screens have been a lot like the iconic self-lacing shoes from Back to the Future for some time now. There has been a lot of of talk about the feasibility of the technology at least as far back as three years ago and we have all grown so accustomed to the thought, that it almost feels weird it is not a thing yet. It also seems like Samsung has been involved in the better part of said talks and rumors and understandably so, since the Korean giant has now amassed a decent collection of patents and proof of concepts on the matter.
The more astute among you, might even remember the company’s project Valley, which gathered a lot of publicity with its work on flexible display"s last year. Well, at the risk of fanning the flames some more, we will also remind you of some more recent developments on the topic, like Samsung"s alleged intention to introduce foldable smartphones as early as MWC 2017 and have them in stores the same year. Even more recently, there ..
