Apple shows off Portrait Mode in latest iPhone 7 Plus ad

Holiday season is over and Apple has released its first iPhone ad of 2017. This one focuses on the Portrait Mode feature on the phone.
Portrait Mode, for those not aware, uses the secondary 57mm telephoto lens on the iPhone 7 Plus along with the primary lens to create a 3D map of the object in front of it and then selectively applies a blur filter around its edges to separate the subject from the background. This creates a highly desirable shallow depth of field effect, which is particularly sought after for portrait image, which is what this effect is primarily designed for.
For what it"s worth, the feature is still technically in beta, but Apple probably has enough confidence in it now to make a commercial specifically for it.

LG makes the Stylo 3 official at CES, the latest stylus-toting mid-ranger

Back in December LG proved it simply couldn"t wait for CES to start and basically pre-announced all the smartphones it planned on showing in Las Vegas these days. Among those was the Stylus 3, the successor to the Stylus 2 from last year.
And today the Korean company is making essentially the same device official once more, this time for the US market. And like its predecessors, this too will bear some different branding. In America, it will be called Stylo 3 (like the Stylo 2 before it), while other markets will get it as the Stylus 3. Why LG is continuing to give this line of handsets two different yet incredibly similar names isn"t clear, but that"s how things are anyway.
Like the identical Stylus 3, the Stylo 3 comes with a 5.7-inch 720p touchscreen, the MediaTek MT6750 chipset with a 1.5 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU, a 13 MP main camera, an 8 MP selfie snapper, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, 4G LTE support, and a 3,200 mAh removable battery. It runs Andro..

The R-8 and R-9 are the latest smartglasses, courtesy of Qualcomm and ODG

Earlier today, Qualcomm struck the mobile tech scene hard with the official announcement of the Snapdragon 835 chipset. The efficient 10nm chip is now more power-friendly and capable than ever, with particularly major performance improvements in the graphics department.
The American semiconductor giant, along with Osterhout Design Group (ODG) wasted no time in introducing an interesting new implementation and potential use for its newfound hardware power. The R-8 and R-9 are both smartglasses, which is a slightly ambiguous title. They offer VR experiences much like the HTC Vive or PS VR, but are untethered and rely solely on the aforementioned Snapdragon chip.
Also, much like Microsoft"s HoloLens, the R-8 and R-9 offer an augmented or mixed reality experience as well. Ralph Osterhout, Founder and CEO of ODG, commented on the exciting future implications of the tech.
ODG is pioneering glasses for the masses that play movies with cinematic clarity, drop you inside immersive 3D in..

Android 7.1.1 Nougat arrives on the Sony Xperia X as part of the latest Concept update

Back in November Sony released its first “Concept” Android build for the Xperia X, and it"s received a couple of updates so far. These Concept builds are experimental and are meant to give people a way to test new software that"s closer to stock Android than Sony"s stable releases.
Today the company has started sending out another update for the Xperia X Concept firmware, and the big new thing is that it"s now based on Android 7.1.1 and not 7.0. This makes Sony the first mobile device maker except Google to have rolled out the absolute latest version of the OS, even if we"re talking about a very limited release here.
Sony"s build number for the new firmware is 38.3.A.0.41, and the Android build number is NMF26F8. The update comes with the December security patches, which is a shame since the January ones are probably going out tomorrow. Anyway, there"s a new Restart option in the Power menu, faster camera startup time, and support for PS4 remote-pla..

Latest MacBook Pro is the first Apple laptop without Consumer Reports recommendation

Apple’s latest batch of MacBooks took yet another hit. Reactions and opinions varied from “touch screen for emojis” regarding the Touch Bar to being called “not good enough” by Forbes.
Now some more criticism comes from Consumer Reports who opted not to recommend the flagship devices. In its report it praises performance and display quality but also finds massive issue with battery life. This comes as a big surprise considering that Apple tends to underpromise the battery life of their devices.
Consumer Reports tested all three devices. The 13” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar ran for 16 hours at the first trial but at the third trial the battery lasted only 3.75 hours. The non-Touch Bar 13” device ranged from 19.5 hours to 4.5 hours and the 15-inch MacBook Pro went from 18.5 to 8 hours.
13″ MacBook Pro without Touch Bar • 13″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar • 15″ MacBook Pro Since battery life is an important feature for a mobile device, Consumer Reports gives it a significant portion in thei..
