Weekly poll: Best devices from CES week 2017

We’re halfway through CES but as we head for the weekend we wanted to know which new device caught your eye. Smartphone launches were fairly rare and some weren’t even proper launches – Xiaomi, for example, brought a white Mi Mix but still won’t sell it in the US.
Samsung’s Galaxy A (2017) lineup came out outside of CES, but it"s still a very intriguing attempt at moving many premium features into the mid-range. The trio (A3, A5, A7) boasts an Always On Super AMOLED display, IP68 waterproofing, Samsung Pay and even 16MP selfie cameras (well, besides the A3). We already shared our first impressions of the Galaxy A5 (2017) and of the Galaxy A3 (2017).
Asus tried to jump ahead of the curve by offering not just VR (Google Daydream) but also Google’s AR system (Project Tango) with Asus Zenfone AR. Weekly poll results: Apple AirPods deflated by fan opinion

Wow, tough crowd – our readers just don’t care for Apple’s AirPods very much. Only around 10% of people voted in favor of the wireless headphones and things get only slightly better for the Apple-branded headphones if you include the wired EarPods.
It seems that the vast majority of our readers buy non-Apple. And it wasn’t a purely anti-wireless attitude either, it’s just that the AirPod form factor didn’t appeal to many. Some were worried about battery life, some about others thought that the in-box options are good enough (the iPhone 7 is bundled with wired EarPods and an Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter).
Naturally, price is a major consideration, exasperated by the possibility of losing one but and having to buy a replacement from Apple.
This wasn’t going to be an easy battle for Apple to win, audiophiles are a fickle crowd – their favorite brand of headphones is a deeply personal thing and they are not easily seduced by new technology (of course, some people swear that vinyl > FLAC).

Weekly poll: Nokia is coming back, but what phones should it make?

Microsoft seems to be sweeping Lumia under the rug and the Nokia brand is coming back. You could argue that it’s not “true Nokia” but most execs at HMD Oy have years of experience at Nokia (later Microsoft) or HTC, Sony Ericsson or similar. And they are building Android phones, no more adventures with unproven mobile OS’s.
But which Nokia would you want back? The brand is most famous for the 3310 – a brick in the best sense of the word. Even IP and MIL-STD rated Androids feel kind of fragile compared to the abuse that an old-school Nokia could take.

The Nokia 7650 was the first phone with a built-in camera that most people encountered. The Finns later perfected their craft with the likes of the N8 and 808 PureView. Enormous sensors and resolutions weren’t even the most strangest Nokia camera – remember the N90 that looked like the digital video cameras of its age? The N93 even had 3x optical zoom in 2006! Weekly poll: Samsung Gear S3, are you getting one?

You heard our thoughts on the Samsung Gear S3, now let’s hear yours.
There are multiple ways to look at this. First, it’s the people who question the need for a smartwatch (or even any watch), but there’s not much to say to them. Then there are those that have an iPhone and the Apple Watch clearly has the best support – Android Wear can only peek over Apple’s walled garden, Samsung has no official solution yet.
The most difficult question to answer is Tizen vs. Android Wear. Google’s OS has more hardware and more apps, but Tizen is the more polished smartwatch OS. The mobile payments are far ahead of Google’s, S Health is the more comprehensive sports tracker too. Tizen is better than Android Wear at working independently, especially if you get the LTE-enabled Gear S3 frontier.

Weekly poll results: OnePlus 3T met with mixed emotions

The OnePlus 3T is proving controversial – it split our voters evenly… well, actually 51/49 against. So, what happened?
People are questing the true size of the upgrade. Some say they don’t use the selfie camera and would have preferred an upgrade for the main camera instead. Others wonder if the new selfie cam will handle low-light shots okay with its 1µm pixels (the old one was 1.4µm).
We didn’t see people complain about the bump in battery capacity, but then there’s the chipset – the Snapdragon 821 is great and all, but not much of an upgrade over the S820. In fact, this was a common theme in the comments – the OnePlus 3T is not an upgrade for current OnePlus 3 owners.
And ones that didn’t get the 3 (perhaps, holding off to see the 3T go official) now don’t have a choice – they have to shell out $40/€40/£30 more for much of the same hardware.
