Liveblog: T-Mobile unveils #UncarrierNEXT at CES

It was just four short years ago that T-Mobile set up shop at CES 2013, and unveiled an all-encompassing strategy that would end up changing the wireless industry in the United States forever.
That is not an understatement. In 2013, T-Mobile was a distant fourth place carrier behind Sprint, AT&T, a..

Sony unveils new headphones and portable speakers within its EXTRA BASS range

Sony is a veritable veteran on the audio scene. The Japanese giant was busy developing high-end acoustic gear long before mobile phones were even a thing. So, every new release is understandably met with a fair bit of excitement from most enthusiasts.
Sony added a total of four headphones models and two wireless speakers to its EXTRA BASS line. It is good to see that the company is still adapting to modern consumer needs, since the new gear is, and we quote: “made for today’s heavy-hitting bass lines and dropping beats”.
A quick rundown, roughly arranged by MSRP starts with the MDR-XB950N1. The flagship wireless model (the one depicted in the picture) is rated for up to 22 hours of playback, has a mic on board and active noise cancellation. The MDR-XB950B1 is basically the same product, minus the noise reduction and with a shorter 18 hour battery life.
Moving on to the wired models – the MDR-XB550AP is an on-ear model, with in-line mic and a wide selection of color options. And last..

Asus unveils Zenfone 3 Zoom, Zenfone AR with 8GB of RAM, Tango and Daydream

Today at CES Asus announced two new smartphones, both of which have been in the rumors quite a lot lately. We"re talking about the Zenfone AR and Zenfone 3 Zoom.
The former is only the second ever handset to come with support for Tango, Google"s augmented reality (AR) system. The Zenfone AR follows the Lenovo Phab2 Pro from last year in this nascent market. But the Asus model takes things one step further, since it also supports Daydream, Google"s VR functionality built into Android Nougat. So if you get a Zenfone AR you can immerse yourself either in augmented reality or virtual reality, depending on your mood. Unfortunately though, you can"t combine the two – for now you can only use Daydream apps when the phone is inside a Daydream VR headset, and Tango apps when it"s in Tango mode.
The Zenfone AR has a 5.7-inch QHD AMOLED touchscreen, and it"s powered by Qualcomm"s Snapdragon 821 chipset aided by a whopping 8GB of RAM – a world first. The main s..

Lenovo unveils an Echo alternative

The last holiday season was so successful for voice-activated devices that Lenovo decided to jump the bandwagon and join the headliners Amazon and Google. The company introduced its own Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa. The device looks a lot like Amazon Echo, but comes in prettier colors. Lenovo built the device in collaboration with Amazon which makes the similarity not that surprising.
The Alexa-voiced Smart Assistant is cylindrical device with a silver upper part and vivid colored lower portion. The upper part with the controls is designed to look like it is levitating. Lenovo implemented 8 360-degree microphones with echo cancellation and noise suppression. There’s also a version with Harman Kardon audio.
Lenovo Smart Assistant • Harman Kardon edition in Black
The device picks up commands from up to 16 feet or almost 5 meters which isn’t very useful if you try to tell it something from the other room.
Google also has a personal assistant but the lack of a sexy female name for..

Lenovo unveils the 500 Multimedia Controller with Windows 10 gesture support

Whether it’s for your HTPC, your smart TV or even console, a good wireless keyboard can be hard to find. The Lenovo 500 Multimedia Controller takes a step into the modern world with a large multi-touch trackpad with Windows 10 gesture support.
Don’t see it? It’s the entire keyboard! That works so much better than the trackpads (ball or optical) of previous Lenovo controllers. The ergonomics have been improved to make the Multimedia Controller comfortable to hold and easy to pick up too (so no fumbling in the dark of your multimedia den).
Lenovo 500 Multimedia Controller
The controller is designed for two-thumb typing and is small enough to stash away in your laptop back if you need it for presentations. It weighs 141g and has a range of 20m. Its battery should last a good 8 months, so it’s not another portable thing that requires constant charging either.
The Lenovo 500 Multimedia Controller will be available in March for $55.

Synaptics unveils optical fingerprint sensor, may debut in Galaxy S8

The fingerprint sensors conquered the smartphones after Apple made those cool again with the iPhone 5s. The last four years those went from sluggish security to super-fast recognition and today those are pretty much a necessary feature for every phone.
But with the bezel-less phones about to become the new trend next year and with the manufacturers fighting for precious space both in the exterior and the insides, the conventional fingerprint sensors are becoming an obstacle.
This is where the new-gen optical fingerprint scanners come in handy. They can work through glass and can easily sit behind the display, losing no precious space on the front panel.
Synaptics unveiled today the industry-first optical fingerprint scanner for smartphones and tablets, which works through 1mm cover glass. It allows buttonless design and yet keep the high-precision biometric security feature intact.
The FS9100 optical sensor work even through 2.5D type of glass, so the manufacturers can get creative..
